The Commission for Diversity & Equality at the IAAW
The Commission for Diversity and Equality aims to promote a non-discriminatory study and work environment at the Institute of Asian and African Studies. It is our objective to critically observe and promote change with regards to teaching, administrative and advisory processes. We are represented at the Institute Council (Institutsrat), we organize events and lectures, and we work on the accessibility of support structures for people affected by discrimination. We are of the opinion that negative experiences in the everyday life of the Institute are not regrettable isolated cases but instead an expression of social power structures. Our goal is an Institute where solidarity is shown towards any discriminatory experiences and where responsibility is taken for overcoming discrimination.
How to get involved
We are comprised of representatives from within the student body, the administrative staff, the academic staff, as well as the professors. Members of the Institute interested in joining the commission or suggesting ideas are welcome to send us an email to the address below.
How to find support
Anyone who would like to contact us with a concrete problem or personal experience is welcome to send us an email at any time. We will treat any messages confidentially. We always stand by those affected by discrimination and try to support them. We will not take any measures that have not been agreed upon. If it is preferred that not the entire commission is contacted, an individual meeting with one of the members of the commission or the Ombudsperson for non-discriminatory study and work, Dr. Chanfi Ahmed, can be organized as well.
