  accompany us throughout the programme: How is the study of Asia and Afric
 a from a New Area Studies perspective connected to the critical examinatio
 n of the conditions under which knowledge about these regions is and has b
 een produced? The lecture introduces the idea of a Southern Attitude\, dev
 eloped in the recently published volume Southern Attitudes in the Social S
 ciences (SAGE\, 2026)\, which asks what a genuinely symmetrical engagement
  between scholars of the 'North' and 'South' might look like.
