Department of Molecular Parasitology

At the Dept. of Molecular Parasitology (Institute of Biology of HU) PD Dr. Susanne Hartmann and Prof. Dr. Richard Lucius study genetic factors that may determine the clinical outcome of infections with the filarial nematode Wuchereria bancrofti. This parasite is transmitted by mosquitoes and can cause severe diseases like elephantiasis in some persons, while others are not affected at all. These studies take place in cooperation with the University of Hyderabad within the frame of a DFG-funded International Research training group “Functional Molecular Infection Epidemiology” (Speaker: Prof. Dr. Lothar Wieler, Veterinary Faculty of Freie Universität Berlin;[ more]).
