Abstract: This talk addresses the ways in which the social relationship named by "comrade" arose and has been transformed over the course of China's revolutionary and post-revolutionary century (1920s-2020s). It presents a radical political analysis of how sociality and relationality can be understood in the concreteness of China's historical passage from semi-colony, to socialist people's republic, to capitalist world power. 

Rebecca E. Karl teaches history at New York University-NY. Her most recent book is China's Revolutions in the Modern World: A Brief Interpretive History (Verso 2020) and she is the author of a number of other books and articles about China's modern and contemporary history. She is a founding co-editor of the positionspolitics.org website, and a member of the Critical China Scholars collective.

This promises to be a really interesting talk and discussion, and we are looking forward to seeing many of you there.

Unsere Gäste, Lena Kaufmann und Bruno Hernandez, geben Einblick in die Berufswelt und stehen für Q&A zur Verfügung.

Lena Kaufmann ist Postdoktorandin am Historischen Seminar und assoziierte Wissenschaftlerin am ISEK – Ethnologie der Universität Zürich. Sie studierte Ethnologie und Sinologie in Berlin, Rom und Shanghai und war beim Goethe-Institut, der GIZ und im Museumsbereich tätig. Sie ist Autorin von Rural-Urban Migration and Agro-Technological Change in Post-Reform China (2021, AUP). Derzeit forscht sie zu chinesisch-schweizerischen Verflechtungen digitaler Infrastrukturen.

Bruno Hernandez ist in Foshan, Provinz Guangdong, beim Handelsamt der Stadt tätig und dort für den Bereich Auslandsinvestitionen zuständig. Im Alltag ist er Ansprechpartner für ausländische Firmen, berät bei Fragen rund um Investitionen, z. B. zu Land, Richtlinien, Zuschüssen usw. Er studierte Asienwissenschaften mit Schwerpunkt China an der HU und hat ein Jahr in Hangzhou verbracht.

Das Event wird von Prof. Genia Kostka moderiert, Professorin für Politik Chinas an der Freien Universität Berlin. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind Chinas digitale Transformation, Umweltpolitik und politische Ökonomie. Neben ihrer wissenschaftlichen Karriere berät sie regelmäßig internationale Organisationen, etwa die Weltbank, OECD, AusAID, GIZ oder Oxfam.

Das Berlin SinoCareers Forum ist eine gemeinschaftliche Initiative des Instituts für Chinastudien der Freien Universität Berlin und des Instituts für Asien- und Afrikawissenschaften der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Das Forum bietet Studierenden regelmäßige Events mit geladenen Expertinnen und Experten, die über ihren beruflichen Werdegang und Berufsmöglichkeiten im chinesischen Kulturraum und darüber hinaus referieren. Im Forum können sich Studierende quasi hands-on über Möglichkeiten für Praktika und die eigene berufliche Zukunftsplanung austauschen und über die wesentlichen Fähigkeiten und Softskills für die berufliche Zukunft informieren.

This lecture is the final one of a total of seven lectures in the BCCN Lecture Series, Winter Term 2021/22

Strikes, protests, and riots by Chinese workers have been rising over the past decade-plus. The state has addressed a number of grievances, yet has also come down increasingly hard on civil society groups pushing for reform. Why are these two seemingly clashing developments occurring simultaneously? Drawing on his recent book, Manfred Elfstrom will use extensive fieldwork and statistical analysis to examine both the causes and consequences of protest in “the workshop of the world.” Instead of taking sides in the old debate over whether non-democracies like China’s are on the verge of collapse or have instead found ways of maintaining their power indefinitely, he will explore the daily evolution of autocratic rule.

Manfred Elfstrom is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics, Philosophy, and Political Science at the University of British Columbia, Okanagan. He is the author of Workers and Change in China: Resistance, Repression, Responsiveness (Cambridge University Press, 2021).
