PhD PROJECT

"Visual Politics of Contemporary Far Right Parties. Explorations of Entanglements Between Germany's AfD and India's BJP" (tentative title)

Abstract

This project explores global entanglements of far right visual politics focusing on Germany's AfD and India's BJP. It scrutinizes matters of (in)visibility, gendered nationalisms, and nation branding as they relate to anti-Muslim narratives amongst other things. Taking a genealogical approach on the employed visual topoi this project uses the far right visual politics as a lens to critically examine the body of knowledge drawn on, as it relates to i.e. narratives of secularism and liberalism. Since visual politics of the far right span a range of disciplines this project pursues a transdisciplinary approach. Carrying out a discourse analysis based on thick description, hermeneutic analysis and critical iconology the methodological approach borrows from visual anthropology and sociology, art history and history of images, and cultural sociology. Moreover, this project brings together various perspectives combining theories from gender studies, sociology of religion, political science, and Islamic studies.  It pursues a discourse analysis that both traces far right visual narratives historically, i.e. connecting them to 19thcentury Orientalist knowledge, and follows them to broader society discourses in the respective contexts. Thus, it proposes a reading of the far right visual politics as a lens to critically examine their underlying body of knowledge.
