PhD Projekt: Indiens Studierende und das „Ideal der Universität“ (Arbeitstitel)

India's Students and the Meaning(s) of the University (working title)

Abstract:

This PhD-project analyzes the meaning(s) of university in post-colonial India as well as the self-placement/-understanding and external-placement/-understanding of students in relation to the task of „saving“ academic freedom. In India, the treatment of public universities and the question of how critical of the government they are allowed to be has become a major issue of dispute within society in recent years. One central factor is the increased public classification of dissent and protest in the academic environment as „anti-national“. The polarizing ideas of an „ideal“ university vis-a-vis an „ideal“ student, are placing the students in an area of conflict. This research aims to explore how the figure of the student is constructed in different contexts and how students themselves negotiate their own position in the political and national context. Further, it looks at how students deal with individual and societal pressures based on expectations and hopes regarding social mobility as well as with the everyday risk of facing structural and/or physical violence. Based on a discourse analysis this research combines an idealistic/academic, a historic and an economic perspectice with a media angle, focusing on power as well as communication structures and everyday practices of resistance. Doing so, the research wishes to show the responsibilities and burdens that are currently attributed to beeing a student in India.
