Abstract

In post-war East Germany and then in German Democratic Republic (GDR), India featured prominently in newsreel film productions. Through these films, that were screened in cinema houses during interludes of main feature film and that claim authenticity of being an eyewitness, specific kinds of images of India were produced. In this study, I am looking at newsreel productions of this period as a strategic cinema device that have deep influences in the Cold War politics and I seek to analyze the representation of images of India in GDR newsreels to understand how the emerging trends of that period bring India closer to the cultural and political requirements of this East German country in its efforts of find an identity and justify its political existence in the turmoiled period of the last century. I try to see the extensive use of visual images of India in the making of newsreels as a case of what can be called "entangled cinematic collaboration", as they represent entangled gazes of India and GDR in making this cinema culture, but also they propose an enquiry into the collaborative possibilities among transnational individual subjects.
