Despite the fact that the vast majority of Muslims lives in Asia, academic research interest in a comparative analysis of Muslim networks and (trans)local Islamic networking in Asia seems to have evolved only very recently. With respect to South and Southeast Asia, Peter Mandaville has argued that “networking between political parties and movements operating in the ‘justice and development mold’ holds the potential to serve as an effective and largely democratic space for the aggregation of Muslim discontent and the pursuit of social justice in the name of Islam” (Peter Mandaville, Transnational Islam in Asia, 2009:3).

In this workshop, we would like to explore the question if this can be equally applied to the new feminist approaches to Islam and gender equality and to the diverse movements and networks in South and Southeast Asia that are referring to the discursive praxis and strategies of Islamic feminism. Is this new “Gender Jihad” or “jihad for gender equality”, as it is sometimes also labelled, capable of providing the shared knowledge and value-based foundation for new epistemic communities and what are the issue-areas that these communities would contribute to in terms of strategic communication and policy formulation? We would also like to look into the relationships between the sites and spaces of an Islamic feminist knowledge production and social actors in South and  Southeast Asia who refer to this discursive knowledge. A second set of questions that we would like to address in this workshop relates to the interface between Islamic and secular feminisms and the perspective for interreligious or intercultural dialogue, again on both the translocal as well as the specific local levels.
