Palatalisation is one of the most common phonological assimilatory processes found across the world’s languages, and it is typically motivated by a high front vowel. Yet, every now and again, palatalisation patterns manifest in languages that challenge typological models because of an observed lack of an obvious motivation or because the sound change only occurs with an unexpected subset of consonants (eg. ‘unnatural' palatalisation of labials in Southern Bantu). Palatalisation is an areal feature of some languages of the Kalahari. In this talk, we present work-in-progress that builds on previous research that describes ‘unnatural palatalisation’ in G|ui (Nakagawa 2006) and ǂ’Amkoe (Gerlach 2018), unrelated ‘Khoisan’ languages of the central Kalahari. We expand the investigation to include more Kalahari Basin Area languages and language varieties, unveiling what we analyse as multiple distinct and independent kinds of palatalisation. We will contextualise the geographic spread of each type and suggest exciting hypotheses for distinct language contact scenarios concerning ǂ’Amkoe (Kx’a), Kalahari Khoe (Khoe-Kwadi), and different branches of Bantu (Niger-Congo).
