Tula is an Adamawa language spoken in northwest of Nigeria. The language has an elaborate system of noun classification comprising classificatory suffixes as well as prefixes. However, the classification system varies slightly between the three Tula dialects Wange, Baule and Yiri. Based on unpublished data by Ulrich Kleinewillinghöfer, inter alia, my master thesis aims at reconstructing the system of noun classification for Proto-Tula using Güldemann and Fiedler’s (2019) approach to gender. In this presentation, I am going to touch upon selected historical aspects, such as the emergence of classificatory prefixes and the relation between agreement and noun form affixes.
