South Asia Studies Seminar

The study of South Asia has a long tradition at the Humboldt-University zu Berlin. In 1825 the first chair for Oriental Languages and Literature, including ‘Indology’. In the history of the university, the study of South Asia has undergone many transformations in intuitional terms as well as in the development and diversification of disciplines. Today, the South Asian Studies Seminar (S.A.S.) is part of the Institute for Asian and African Studies and stands for an interdisciplinary approach alongside academic exchange across the regions of Asia and Africa.

The South Asian Studies Seminar encompasses a broad spectrum of fields in research and academic teaching, including Indology (of classical and modern literatures), history, geography, philosophy and religion. Its focus is on South Asia, i.e. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives. Methodologically the S.A.S. combines approaches from the humanities and social sciences and furthers the interdisciplinary study of historical, socio-economic and cultural processes. The imparting of philological expertise is also central to the academic goals of the Seminar. In addition to Hindi and Urdu, Telugu is now also one of the languages that can be studied at the S.A.S. Furthermore, the teaching programme offers courses that deal with a diverse array of topics such as urbanization, industrialization, migration/circulation, historiography, environmental history and gender.
