Vortrag Iftikhar Dadi Neorealism and Humanism

A critically acclaimed film, that reinvented Pakistani Cinema but was lost to the public for many decades.

Film Screening and Talk by Iftikhar Dadi (Cornell University, History of Art and Visual Studies) on Neorealism and Humanism in this film from the early decades of Pakistan', when it had two wings, East and West. Jago Hua Savera, described as a rare contemporary example of a neorealist film in Pakistan, was directed by A.J Kardar, with the screenplay adapted into Urdu by renowned progressive poet Faiz Ahmed Faz from a story by Bengali novelist Manik Bandopadhyay.

It was not allowed to be released under the dictatorship of Ayub Khan but went on to win a gold medal at the 1st Moscow International Film Festival. Recenty, it was selected for screening as part of the Cannes Classics section at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.

Festival de Cannes terms it a "A quasi-documentary fiction", describing it as "one of the first films to offer an insight into the region, the poverty of its fisherfolk and the life far from the big cities, dominated by the rhythms of the river."
