Dr. Jarmila Ptáčková, Czech Academy of Sciences:

Poverty as an Economic Asset. China’s Fight against Poverty
in Eastern Tibet

“China completed its fight against poverty in 2020.” This is being proclaimed by the government of the PRC. The official claims supported by statistical data, however, differ quite significantly from the reality. The government programmes to alleviate poverty and “modernise” the countryside set on one-way top-down implementation procedure and overwhelmed the rural population with diverse material and financial subsidies and supports. With the extending time of state assistance to rural population the subsidy investments from the state are reaching unbearable amounts, while many households are still unable to establish alternative sustainable livelihoods.

The Lecturer:

Jarmila Ptáčková graduated from and earned her Ph.D. at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, specializing in Chinese and Tibetan Studies. Her research focuses mainly on Chinese development policy and subsequent social and economic changes in China’s Tibetan areas, on China’s ethnic policy, and on the role of China’s minorities in the PRC’s cultural diplomacy. Currently, she is affiliated with the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague.
