Nekrasova, Yelizaveta: Die Basare Bucharas vom 16. bis zum frühen 20. Jahrhundert.
Das Antlitz einer Handelsstadt im Wandel.
1998. 76 S., Paperback, ISBN 3-87997-599-X, EUR 8,60

Fragner, Bert G.: Die "Persophonie". Regionalität, Identität und Sprachkontakt in der Geschichte Asiens.
1999. 120 S., Paperback, ISBN 3-87997-601-5, EUR 8,60
Neuauflage in Vorbereitung

Allworth, Edward A. : The Preoccupations of Abdalrauf Fitrat, Bukharan Nonconformist. An Analysis and List of his Writings.
2000. 72 S., Paperback, ISBN 3-87997-603-1, EUR 8,60

During the 1920s and 1930s, The New York Public Library and the Library of Congress of the USA acquired for their collections at least 10 books and paphlets written by the subject of this analysis, 'Abdalrauf' Abdurahimoghli Fitrat (1886-1938) and published between 1923 and 1927, inclusively. Togehter with other materials from Central Asia, they are included in the online catalogue of The New York Public Library.
The paper retraces the life and career of 'Abdalrauf Fitrat, one of the major figures in Central Asian and especially Bukharan history and literature of the early 20th century, and it gives a list of his published and unpublished writings: political pamphlets and literary as well as scholarly texts. This bibliography enlarges previous lists of Fitrat's works (none of them available in English), and it probably lists most of his works (191 entries in alphabetical order by title). "To summarize: the chronology of stages in 'Abdrauf Fitrat's major nonconformity reach from the beginning to end of his professional career."

Bellér-Hann, Ildiko: The Written and the Spoken. Literacy and Oral Tradition Among the Uyghur.
2000. 72 S., Paperback, ISBN 3-87997-604-X, EUR 10,20

Scholarly interest in the Uyghur, a Turkic speaking Muslim population who live in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in norhwest China has grown in recent years but both the people and the region are poorly understood relative to other parts of the Muslim world. Research is impeded by the difficulty in accessing archival sources locally and by the limitations on ethnographic fieldwork.
This paper breaks new ground by focusing on literacy and oral transmission. Drawing on diverse indigenous and foreign sources and making use of modern anthropological literature, it documents the intermingling of the two forms of transmission at the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It argues that, although the majority of the population were illiterate, they were aware of the written word and its uses. It also examines the main features of traditional Islamic education, the most important site for transmitting literacy, as well as the first attempts to reform Islamic schooling. The last part of the paper focuses on the modern period and draws on the author's own field research in the region. Here the argument is that, in spite of universal schooling and nominally high rates of literacy, oral transmission has retained its importance both in urban and in peasant society.

Kazakov, Bahadir: Bukharan Documents. The Collection in the District Library, Bukhara.
2001. 104 S., Paperback, ISBN 3-87997-605-8, EUR 10,20

The District Library in Bukhara holds about 2000 documents from the 16th to the ealy 20th century. The present paper offers a history of the collection, a detailed description of the holdings by types of documents and by chanceries. Appendixes supply a glossary of terms used in the documents, and five items are published here for the first time in facsimile and English translation: a decree issued by Nauruz Ahmad Khan (dated 1556), and three transactions concerning landholdings dated 1883, 1899 and 1920. Thus, the paper is a contribution to the administrative and social history of the Bukharan amirate, a subject which has been seriously neglected until present.

Amanžolova, Dina A.: Ausgangspunkte moderner Staatlichkeit: Kasachstan 1900-1920.
2003. 68 S., Paperback, ISBN 3-87997-621-X, EUR 8,60

Frank, Allen J. / Usmanov, Mirkasyim A.: Materials for the Islamic History of Semipalatinsk:
Two Manuscripts by Ahmad-Walî al-Qazânî and Qurbân 'alî Khâlidî.
2001. 98 S., Paperback, ISBN 3-87997-606-6, EUR 10,20

Semipalatinsk in eastern Kazakhstan was one of the largest and most influential of imperial Russia's Islamic religious and educational centers, but despite its stature, it is also the most poorly documented, at least in published sources.
The two manuscripts wich are being published and translated in this study are major and heretofore unknown sources for Islamic culture in imperial Russia in general, and for the city of Semipalatinsk in particular. They are primarily histories of Semipalatinsk's Muslim religious institutions: the city's mosques, madrasas and scholars, as well as the merchants who supported these institutions. The texts provide us with unparalleled information on the personalities who constituted this major Islamic cultural center and also with unique evidence on the scholarly and Sufi networks that linked Semipalatinsk and eastern Kazakhstan with the rest of the Islamic world.

Kendirbai, Gulnar: Land and People. The Russian Colonization of the Kazak Steppe.
2002. 80 S., Paperback, ISBN 3-87997-502-7, EUR 10,20

The Russian colonization of the Kazak steppe was characterized by the seizure of Kazak grazing lands by voluntary Europeans, mostly Russian Cossacks and peasants. This process began soon after the annexation of the Kazak Younger Horde in 1731, long before the Kazak lands were officially declared state property given to the Kazaks for collective use in the Provisional Statute of 1868.
The paper investigates this process of colonization. Special attention is given to the proceedings of the official commissions who tried, on the basis of "scientific" reasoning, to delimitate the amount of land required for the Kazaks and their flocks and thus to provide a rationale to hand all the "excessive" lands over to the settlers. It is based on the reports of these commissions, on archival sources and on contemporary Kazak material.

Wennberg, Franz: An Inquiry into Bukharan Qadimism. Mirza Salim-bik.
2003. 74 S., Paperback, ISBN 3-87997-608-2, EUR 8,60

This study focuses on a servant in the fiscal administration of the Bukharan emirate, Mirza Salim bik (1848 or 1850 - 1930) who reached the peak of his career between 1917 and 1920, a time of tension in Bukhara. He certainly was no admirer of the jadid movement, so this study also is a tentative, albeit hopefully also a rather circumspect attempt to write a biography of a Bukharan qadim, although admittedly maybe not a very typical one. The paper thus also aims at shedding some light on the hitherto neglected "old style" intellectuals (qadimchilar) in Central Asia. It uses published and unpublished sources, historiography as well as archival documents and personal narratives. It uses a broad range of Soviet and post-Soviet as well as Western scholarship.
Additionally, the evolution of concepts of time and space in Central Asian historiography plays a significant part in the paper.

Kaganovich, Albert: The Mashhadi Jews (Djedids) in Central Asia.
2007. 92 S., Paperback, ISBN 978-3-87997-141-6, EUR 10,20

The Djedids are so called because they were "new" Muslims - newly converted from Judaism. It is the name for a relatively small group of Jews from Mashhad, Iran, who were more or less forced to accept Islam. Many of them subsequently left Iran for Tsarist Central Asia where they formed a separate group, although they partly also merged with Bukharan Jews. They prospered in international trade between the Tsarist Empire, Iran and Afghanistan, with the apex of their fortunes situated shortly before the outbreak of World War I. Because of the war and later as a consequence of the Revolution, decline set in.

Gorshenina, Svetlana: The Private Collections of Russian Turkestan in the Second Half of the 19th and Early 20th Century.
2004. 206 S., Paperback, ISBN 3-87997-624-4, EUR 24,80

This paper explores the origins and contents of collections from Russian Turkestan. These collections were brought together by various people, officers in the Russian army, scientist, travellers and antiquaries. The author shows which items were collected and how the composition of the collections changed over time, much priced items becoming very expensive a few decades after the Russian conquest. The demand for antique objects very early on led to the creation of a specialised market in such objects.
The collections described in the paper were in a way instrumental in shaping the view Europeans held of Central Asia and Central Asians, since it were the objects brought from there, the drawings and, later on, the photographs wich were the visual counterpart of travelogues and other written reports.

Erkinov, Aftandil: Praying for and against the Tsar: Prayers and Sermons in Russian-dominated Khiva and Tsarist Turkestan.
2004. 112 S., Paperback, ISBN 3-87997-628-7, EUR 10,20

Prayers and sermons, formal as well as informal, can serve as important sources for public opinion, spontaneous as well as elicited, in pre-modern societies. This paper offers some examples, taken from Khiva (Khorezm) following the Russian conquest in 1873. Two prayers, one written probably immediately after the conquest, the other during the Russo-Japanese war, are published here in the original Turki and in English translation. Sermons, and Friday sermons in particular, mention the name of the ruler, and of course it was a problem how non-Muslim rulers should be treated in this respect. Two versions of an officially drafted Friday sermon in favor of the Tsar are published here in the original Turki and in English translation, along with an essay by the journalist and politician N. Ostroumov (written in 1930) found in the Tashkent archives in which he discusses the history and significance of these sermons (in the original Russian and in English translation).

2007. 133 S., Paperback, ISBN 978-3-87997-645-4, EUR 10,20
