Liz Frank came to Namibia in 1990 through her activism in the Bremen anti-apartheid movement, where she supported postcolonial educational reform until 1997. In 1999, she became editor of the feminist magazine Sister Namibia, and from 2004 to 2009 she headed the Sister Namibia organization. Since 2011, she has worked for the Women’s Leadership Centre in Windhoek, which conducts feminist educational work with various groups of marginalized women and girls in Namibia, including indigenous San women and girls and young lesbians. Through writing and photography workshops, training on women’s and human rights, publications, and events, the program fosters the creative voice, self-confidence, and solidarity among participants, as well as their advocacy for their rights.
In 1997, Liz co-founded the first Namibian LGBTQ organization, The Rainbow Project, and in 2004, the pan-African Coalition of African Lesbians, supporting both organizations for many years as a board member. In 2016, she was awarded the Rosa Courage Prize by Gay in May Osnabrück.
