Project: A Grammar of Ngen: A South Mande Language of Ivory Coast
Project period: October 2024 – October 2027

This project is the first documentation of the South Mande language Ngen (ISO 639-3:gnj; Gc: ngen1256). The language is spoken by a max. 1000 adults in the Ivory Coast’s northeast. Ngen is unique due to its geographical isolation from close relatives and high influence of the unrelated Baule language. The main objectives are to document the language for future generations and create a comprehensive, user-friendly grammar that caters to professional linguists seeking typological information. The research focuses on unique features of Ngen, such as its complex tonal system, rich pronominal paradigms and  typologically rare passive lability and logophoricity.
