Since the end of April 2021, I have been working as a research assistant in the collaborative project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) "De:link//Re:link: Local perspectives on transregional (dis-)entanglements" in the department "Literatures and Cultures of Africa" at the Institute for Asian and African Studies (IAAW) at HU Berlin. In my research and dissertation project with the working title "New Dynamics in the Cultural Field of Dar es Salaam and Nairobi since the Establishment of the Confucius Institutes" I analyze how the cultural field of East African metropolises is changing due to the growing influence of the Confucius Institutes and which changed power relations result from this.
In doing so, I address the question of whether the Confucius Institutes in East Africa act as a catalyst of cultural decolonization, as they undermine the supremacy of established European cultural institutions, or whether they in turn establish their own dominant regime? Furthermore, I would like to know how Confucius Institutes understood as a cultural and academic part of the Belt and Road Initiative reshape the cultural dynamics in East Africa as well as the policies of European institutions in East Africa? How do the Kenyan and Tanzanian governments position themselves in relation to this, and how does the presence of the Confucius Institutes affect their national cultural and educational policies? I will also consider the perspective of independent local cultural actors: How do they deal with the cooperation offers by the Confucius Institutes in comparison to the European ones? How does the public use the activities and events offered by the Confucius Institutes? How do they rate them in comparison to the Alliance Française, the British Council and the Goethe-Institut? And how do the European cultural institutes assess China's competition, and what strategies are they developing to hold their ground?
Overarching my research project is the collaborative project "De:link//Re:link: Local perspectives on transregional (dis-)entanglements" which investigates the impact of transregional infrastructure projects such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) initiated by China in 2013 and elaborates local perspectives, reactions and mobilizations in relation to the transregional infrastructure projects. I am supervised during my doctoral studies by Prof. Dr. Susanne Gehrmann.
