Dear students, dear visitors,
The Department of African Studies is part of the Institute for Asian and African Studies. Its staff teach and conduct research in the fields of African history, African linguistics, African literature and cultures, as well as interdisciplinary subjects.
The diverse range of courses offered by our department contributes to the curriculum of three degree programmes:
The Bachelor's programme in Regional Studies Asia/Africa is a joint programme offered by the various departments and interdisciplinary areas of the Institute for Asian and African Studies. With its focus on Africa, the content of this programme corresponds to a degree in African Studies.
The Master's programme in Asian/African Studies is also an IAAW programme in which students can deepen their knowledge of African Studies by choosing different profiles and courses related to Africa.
The Master's programme in Global History is a joint programme offered by the Department of History and Cultural Studies, the John F. Kennedy Institute, and the Institute for East Asian Studies at Freie Universität Berlin, in cooperation with the Institute of History and the Institute for Asian and African Studies at Humboldt University of Berlin.
The Department of African Studies offers excellent study conditions thanks to its international cooperation in research and teaching with universities in Europe and Africa, as well as its location in the heart of Berlin.
