Brief description:

  • The modern standard Thai is the official and working language in the Kingdom of Thailand. Thai, formerly Siamese belongs to the Tai family of languages, as well as the Lao and the Shan language. In modern standard Thai five tones are distinguished. These tones are displayed in a separate, complex writing system. Thai has borrowed many words from Sanskrit, Mon, Khmer, Chinese and, more recently, from English and adapted them to their own phonetic inventory. The lexis reflects the traditional culture and the complex social relationships in Thai society, so that the knowledge of Thai- language allows a great way for the understanding of cultural and social phenomena.
