The presentation will deal with three interesting issues in the pronominal system of Togoyo, an extinct isolate language of the NDOGOIC pool within the Ubangi family. Firstly, I will describe the extensive system of demonstrative pronouns which exhibit an interesting split between animate and inanimate pronouns. The second talking point will be the possessive pronoun system, which exhibits an interesting twofold system of both suffixed and prefixed possessive pronouns. Initially described by Santandrea as a distinction between inalienable and alienable possession, my analysis shows that this thesis can be disproven and other explanations for the distribution of POSSR- and -POSSR are needed. The third and last point of my talk will treat a mysterious ‘pronoun’ a, that is found extensively throughout the data. Santandrea does not give a satisfactory explanation for it. The question that arises remains: Is it an animate pronoun? Is it a copula? Is it an identificational marker? Is it purely phonological? Or all of the above?
