Johanna Neumann is a doctoral student at the IAAW and is writing her doctoral thesis on "Zat Pwe, Nationalism and Society in Myanmar" under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Rehbein. She completed her Master's degree in South East Asian Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London in 2013. In 2011, she received her Bachelor's degree from the IAAW at Humboldt University of Berlin in Regional Studies Asia/Africa.

She began her language training in Burmese in 2009 with an intensive language course with Dr. Uta Gärtner. She then spent a year studying Burmese as a foreign language full-time at the Yangon University of Foreign Languages (YUFL) with various native-language teachers. During her master's degree at SOAS, she took various Burmese courses with John Okell. Several individual intensive courses by Justin Watkins and John Okell and regular stays of several months in Myanmar complemented her university language training.

Johanna Neumann focuses her research on Myanmar on the following topics in particular: performing arts (especially Zat Pwe), nationalism, textbooks and curricula, culture, politics and cultural policy, literature, gender.

She is a founding member of the Myanmar Institute e.V. and heads the Myanmar Study Group Berlin, a subgroup of the Myanmar Institute.
