Martin Schalbruch has been teaching the regular Thai language and reading courses at the Institute of Asian and African Studies since the winter semester of 2010/11.


From the winter semester 2004/05 to the winter semester 2009/10, he regularly taught Thai basic and advanced courses at the Chair of Southeast Asian Studies II at the University of Passau.


He was a research assistant at the Chair of Southeast Asian Philologies at the Department of Southeast Asian Studies at the IAAW From February 2001 to June 2003. Previously, from May 1999 to December 2001, he was a research assistant in the project for the creation of digital databases of Standard Thai at the IAAW (project leader: Prof. Dr. Christian Bauer).


Martin Schalbruch studied German studies and history and graduated with the German “erstes Staatsexamen” (equivalent to a master’s degree). He taught German at Ramkhamhaeng University, Bangkok, for 17 years. He started pursuing a master’s degree in Thai Studies at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok in June 1993, and graduated in 1997. His master’s thesis was titled “Features of Contemporary Thai Narrative Texts and Their Relation to Thai Cultural Characteristics”.


Martin Schalbruch is a member of the board of the German-Thai Society.
