Courses

Georg Berkemer has conducted research especially on issues of premodern and early modern South Asian history and historiography. He has published articles on the history of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, epigraphy and the social history of southern India. He additionally investigates topical questions of environmental and social history and theory of history.

 

Since October 2010 he has been a research associate at the Department of South Asia Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where he teaches history and southern Indian regional languages. Dr. Berkemer studied Ethnology, Indology and South Asian History at the Universität Heidelberg, the University of Wisconsin in Madison and Andhra University in Visakhapatnam. He received his doctorate in 1991 for a thesis on the regional history of eastern India (Andhra Pradesh and Orissa). He has subsequently held positions in Kiel, Freiburg, Kyoto, Heidelberg and Berlin.
