About the Event
The discussion forum will zoom into the more than 40 year long history of Afghanistani displacement through the most recent developments of deportations in Pakistan and Germany, since the Taliban takeover in 2021. A transregional perspective allows us to see how these two contexts are quite literally connected through the paths and experiences of Afghanistani refugees and migrants, especially women, fleeing the Taliban in search of safety and a better life. The two cases also show us how regimes of citizenship and international humanitarian law are interwoven with racialized public discourse and public policy, be it in Germany or Pakistan.

How are Afghanistani framed in public discourse surrounding migration, displacement and deportation in Pakistan and Germany? How do Afghanistani human rights and especially women’s rights activists navigate these discourses in both contexts? Given the heated public debate on refugees and migration pushed by the rise of the right-wing within Germany, what are the actions, spaces, challenges and opportunities of activists in this regard?

Join us for an evening of conversations aimed at creating a space of solidarity with Afghanistanis and building alliances between civil society from the Global South and North.
