Das Institut für Asien- und Afrikawissenschaften der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin sucht eine*n möglichst promovierte*n Projektwissenschaftler*in zur Projektmitarbeit in dem vom Europäischen Forschungsrat finanzierten Projekt „Power, Politics and Contestation in Global Technical Standard-Setting (TECHtonics)“, unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Sarah Eaton.

TECHtonics bietet neue theoretische und praktische Einblicke in den aktuellen Wandel und die Auseinandersetzungen in einem wichtigen Bereich der globalen Wirtschaftsordnung: der internationalen Standardisierung für neue Technologien. Im Arbeitspaket 1 (bereits angelaufen) untersucht das Forschungsteam die Determinanten von drei „aufstrebenden Standardisierungsmächten“ (China, Indien und Kenia). Im Arbeitspaket 2, das Anfang 2026 beginnen wird, wird das Team die komplexen Formen der Auseinandersetzungen untersuchen, die sich derzeit in der internationalen Normung abzeichnen, wobei „mixed methods“ zum Einsatz kommen – Umfragen werden mit ausführlichen Interviews und teilnehmender Beobachtung kombiniert. Das Projekt ist interdisziplinär, da es Erkenntnisse aus der Normungsliteratur, den internationalen Beziehungen (IR), den Entwicklungsstudien, den Rechts- und Regulierungsbereichen sowie den Regionalstudien kombiniert.

 

Aufgabengebiet:

  • wiss. Dienstleistungen in der Forschung im Projekt „Power, Politics and Contestation in Global Technical Standard-Setting (TECHtonics)“
  • Organisation und Durchführung des TECHtonics-Arbeitspakets 2 zum Thema „governance ruptures“ und Auseinandersetzungen in der internationalen Normung zwischen etablierten und aufstrebenden Normungsmächten
  • Design und Analyse einer länderübergreifenden Umfrage unter Normungsexperten zur Wahrnehmung der internationalen Normungsgovernance
  • Datenerhebung, Datenanalyse und Arbeit an Projektpublikationen
  • Mitwirkung bei der Verwaltung der ERC-Fördermittel und Organisation der zugehörigen Projektveranstaltungen

 

Anforderungen:

  • abgeschlossenes wiss. Hochschulstudium in einer sozialwissenschaftlichen Fachrichtung (z. B. Politikwissenschaft, Wirtschaftswissenschaft oder Soziologie) oder einem verwandten Fachgebiet (z. B. Regionalstudien), Promotion erwünscht
  • fließende Englischkenntnisse (mind. B2)
  • Erfahrungen oder starkes Interesse an qualitativen und/oder quantitativen Forschungsmethoden
  • nachweislich hervorragende akademische Leistungen
  • Interesse, Fähigkeiten und Sprachkenntnisse, um kurze Forschungsreisen zu einem oder mehreren der globalen Zentren der internationalen Normungsgremien (Europa, Amerika, Asien) durchzuführen
  • Bereitschaft zum Umzug nach Berlin

    • Deutschkenntnisse
    • vorherige Erfahrung in der quantitativen Datenerhebung und –analyse
    • Nachweise über frühere Forschungsarbeiten zur Normungspolitik oder zu einem eng verwandten Thema

Der/die erfolgreiche Kandidat*in wird in einem kleinen, kollegialen Forschungsteam im Herzen Berlins arbeiten. Die Projektmitglieder haben die Möglichkeit, individuelle Projekte zu verfolgen und gleichzeitig zu den Ergebnissen des Gemeinschaftsprojekts beizutragen. Die großzügige Finanzierung dieses Projekts deckt Konferenzreisen, längere Feldforschungsaufenthalte und alle anderen Kosten, um Forschungsergebnisse zu teilen, ab.

The Department of Asian and African Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is hiring a project researcher, who will join the European Research Council-funded project on “Power, Politics and Contestation in Global Technical Standard-Setting (TECHtonics)”, led by Prof. Dr. Sarah Eaton.

TECHtonics offers new theoretical and practical insights on the current transformation and contestation in one key arena of global economic governance: international standardization for emerging technologies. In Work Package 1 (already underway), the research team is studying the determinants of three “rising standards powers” (China, India and Kenya). In Work Package 2, which will commence in early 2026, the team will study the complex forms of contestation now unfolding in international standardization using mixed methods – surveys are combined with in-depth interviews and participant observation. The project is interdisciplinary as it combines insights from the standardization literature, international relations (IR), development studies, legal and regulatory fields as well as area studies.

 

Job description:

  • scientific service in research in the project “Power, Politics and Contestation in Global Technical Standard-Setting (TECHtonics)”
  • organization and execution of TECHtonics Work Package 2 on “governance ruptures” and contestation in international standardization between established and rising standards powers
  • design and analysis of a cross-national survey of standardization experts on perceptions of international standardization governance
  • data collection, analysis and work on project publications
  • assistance with ERC grant management and organization of associated project events

 

Requirements:

  • completed scientific university education in a social science subject (e.g. political science, economics or sociology) or a related field (e.g. area studies), doctorate desirable
  • fluency in English (at least B2)
  • experience or strong interest in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods
  • record of academic excellence
  • interest, skills, and language proficiency to conduct short research trips to one or more of the global centers of international standardization governance (Europe, America, Asia)
  • willingness to re-locate to Berlin
  • desirable:
    • knowledge of German
    • previous experience in quantitative data collection and analysis
    • track record of prior research on standardization politics or closely related issue
    • one or more peer-previewed publication(s) or a manuscript(s) under review

 

The successful candidate will join a small and collegial research team located in the heart of Berlin. There is scope for project members to pursue individual projects while contributing to collaborative project outputs.   • tasks for personal scientific qualification (doctoral degree - the dissertation project will address a topic covered in Work Package 1 and be based on qualitative and quantitative empirical research)

We warmly invite you to a BCCN Talk with Amy King, Associate Professor in the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University, on 

The Strategic Foundations of International Economic Order: China, Bretton Woods, and the Cold War.
 
In the early 1940s, Nationalist China was an important shaper of the post-World War II economic order founded at Bretton Woods. By the early 1950s, the People’s Republic of China had become a target of Cold War economic sanctions and absent from the order’s major institutions. Tracing Nationalist and Communist ideas about China’s place in the international economic order, Amy King examines how these ideas shaped, and were shaped by, the changing character of that order from World War II to the early Cold War. She explores the order-shaping mechanisms used by Chinese actors, and the important continuities in Nationalist and Communist ideas about the strategic, rather than liberal, foundations of international economic order. Examining the order transition from World War II to Cold War highlights the incremental evolution in shared ideas that may occasion other moments of order transition, and the historical origins of contemporary Chinese economic ordering ideas.
 
Amy King is Associate Professor in the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University’s Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs. She has published widely on China-Japan relations, the economics-security nexus in Asia, and China's historical and contemporary role in shaping the international order. The author of China-Japan Relations After World War II: Empire, Industry and War, 1949–1971 (Cambridge University Press, 2016), Amy’s works have also appeared in the European Journal of International Relations, Modern Asian Studies, Security Studies, Journal of Cold War Studies, and the Cambridge Economic History of China, among others. Her research has been supported by an Australian Research Council DECRA Fellowship and a Westpac Research Fellowship. She holds an MPhil in Modern Chinese Studies and DPhil in International Relations from the University of Oxford.

25.09.2025 - China Research Meets STEM: Invitation to a networking event

 

With this pilot event we wish to provide an exchange platform for STEM researchers and scholars researching Chinese society, politics or culture (China scholars) in the Berlin-Potsdam area. The goal is to let the two groups share knowledge, experiences and ideas.

If you as a STEM researcher have questions on Chinese society, politics or culture, or wish to add China-related social sciences aspects into your work (maybe a future proposal), this is the event for you. Likewise, if you are a China scholar and wish to learn more about science in contemporary China, could imagine to support a STEM team, or maybe even design research on scientific knowledge production, come and find your partners.

We welcome all interested China scholars and STEM researchers to join this first networking event and express their hopes, uncertainties and questions.

Gushi FM (Story FM)

In China's complex and saturated media landscape, Gushi FM stands out as an unlikely success story. After starting in 2017, Gushi FM is now one of China's most popular podcasts.

In each episode, Gushi FM features an individual telling a story from his or her own point of view. Experiences of adventure and the strange feature among the more than four hundred episodes to date, but more common are stories of love and loss, hardship and compromise, or simply coming to terms with life in a changing China. 

One man tells of a lifetime of separation from his father in Cuba, while another explains his childhood on boats on the Yangtze. A woman tells of her mother's experience as a Vietnamese bride in rural China. Dancers talk about the frisson and passion in an underground club, while five people talk about life under the Wuhan lockdown. Many talk about people and situations now lost to the past. Together, these stories represent a remarkable window on experiences from across the country and on the vagaries of the human condition.

Speaker: Kou Aizhe is the creator of Gushi FM. He previously worked as a journalist in Chinese media and with Swedish and Canadian broadcasters. In this event, Kou Aizhe will talk about his work with Gushi FM and how he tells these stories in his podcasts.
