Unveiling the Realities of Gender Based Violence in Nigerian Higher Education Institutions: Research Insights
Gender-based violence (GBV) within Nigerian educational institutions is a persistent and deeply rooted issue, shaped by complex cultural, institutional, and societal dynamics particularly in the higher education institutions. It includes sexual, economic, physical and psychological violence and other forms of abuse and discrimination entrenched in gender inequality and power imbalances. This presentation showcases research insights which focus on these forms of GBV, the prevalence, drivers, and the consequences experienced by students, faculty, and staff in higher education settings in Nigeria. It places a strong focus on the role of power dynamics, gender norms, and systemic inequalities that contribute to GBV, particularly against women and marginalized groups. The presentation contributes to a deeper understanding of the context-specific realities of GBV, the lived experiences and systemic challenges such as silence, entrenched patriarchal norms, lack of enforcement of legal framework, and inadequate institutional responses. This research thus invites for further reflection, dialogue, and collaborative thinking toward comprehensive policy enforcement, evidence-based and survivor-centered approaches, community-based intervention and the development of inclusive, context-sensitive strategies for addressing gender-based violence and harassment in academia.
Dorothy Ebere Adimora is a Professor of Educational Psychology in the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Currently, she is an Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung experienced research fellow at Margherita von Brentano Center for Gender Studies at Freie Universität Berlin, where she conducts a research project on “Gender-Based-Violence against Students, Faculty, and Staff in the Higher Education Institutions in Nigeria”. Ebere has widely published on mental health, gender issues, teachers’ job satisfaction, students’ learning outcomes, and social related issues in academic environments. She is the Founding/Chief Executive Director of Moremi Psycho-Socio-Economic Foundation (MOPSEF), a non-governmental, non-profit organization, which is committed to promoting gender equality, youth empowerment, access to education, human rights advocacy, and sustainable livelihoods for children, girls, women, adolescents, and marginalized groups.
