The Department for African Studies
Dear Students, dear Visitors,
The Department of African Studies is part of the Institute of Asian and African Studies. Its members teach and conduct research in the disciplines of African history, African linguistics, and African literature and culture, as well as interdisciplinary subjects.
The broad range of course offerings in the department can be undertaken as part of three degree programmes:
- The Bachelor of “Asian/African Regional Studies” covers all the different departments and subject areas of the Institute of Asian and African Studies and with a focus on Africa is equal to other African studies degrees on BA level.
- The Master of “African Studies” is the degree programme of our department.
- The Master of “Global History” is offered across the Department of History and Cultural Studies, John-F-Kennedy Institute and Institute of East Asien Studies, Free University Berlin, together with the Institute of History and the Institute of Asian and African Studies, Humboldt-University of Berlin.
Our department cooperates internationally in research and teaching with universities in Europe and Africa and provides excellent study conditions with its home in the heart of Berlin.
