PhD PROJECT

Wishspace: Desert Imageries and Negotiations of Place in the Audiovisual Practices of Contemporary Israeli Artists (Arbeitstitel)

Abstract

The aim of my PhD thesis is to explore desert representations, imageries and allusions – both of literal and metaphorical nature – in contemporary Israeli audiovisual cultures in order to understand their significance for the visualisation of identity practices and negotiations of young Israeli artists. The depictions of the desert as simultaneously geographically, and thus geopolitically, decoupled and as essentially Middle Eastern in public imaginations, confounds and collapses nationalised and ethnicised attributions. They produce the desert as a symbolic transgressive space for the exploration, enactment and performance of critical longing and desires – especially for the gaze of trans- and international audiences beyond territorial borders and hostilities. My research interest is particularly in the theorisation of the desert as a symbolic construct: what I call a ‘wishspace’. As it allows for the creative play with multiplicity and polysemotics, the desert wishspace can be understood concurrently as a site of subversive protest and of escapist wish-fulfilment which suspends the very real territorial national dilemma. Furthermore, I wish to explore in how far the metaphor of the desert is applicable beyond the literal to other visual representations and sceneries which are to elude or subvert the dominant national narrative.
