The diffusion of formal Chinese language teaching, both at a curricular and at a non-curricular level, has become rather widespread in Italy in the past few years. Moreover, as regards the stages of the school system in which formal Chinese language teaching is still not provided, namely primary and middle schools, an increasing number of informal courses and cultural events have been promoted so far through the collaboration between schools, Confucius Institutes and local associations.

Besides that, being an important component of individual and collective multilingual repertoires among pupils, especially in different geographical areas with considerable numbers of Chinese residents, Chinese is promoted within a frame of multilingual education thanks to some local and national projects.

The current lecture aims at providing an overview of Chinese language promotion in the Italian school system, focusing on the one side on its diffusion, and on the other side on specific strategies for its promotion as a means for plural linguistic identity construction of Chinese students and students of Chinese descent.
