Book Launch: “Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum: A Multifaceted History of Khmer Rouge Crimes”

with Stephanie Benzaquen-Gautier and Ann-Laure Porée

It's been almost fifty years since Phnom Penh fell to Khmer Rouge forces. Within a few weeks of their victory, the country’s new masters established in one of the city's schools a detention and torture center codenamed S-21. Between mid-1975 and early 1979, at least 18,000 people were killed there. After the overthrow of the Pol Pot regime, this prison was converted into a memorial. Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, as it was named, has been from the start a major site for the remembrance of Democratic Kampuchea crimes. With contributions from 16 international scholars, practitioners, and artists, this edited volume offers new sources and perspectives on the museum’s history. It reflects on the challenges the institution has faced in the past and will face in the twenty-first century, with the coming of the post-justice era in Cambodia.
